Pregnant and Living on Campus: What Are My Options?

Finding out you’re pregnant while you’re in college can bring a lot of uncertainty. You may be wondering how an unexpected pregnancy could affect your education and future. If you’re living on campus or away from family for the first time, you may also be asking where you’ll live and who you can turn to for support.

You don’t have to have every answer today. At Hope Women’s Center, we’ll help you learn about available resources, provide one-on-one support, and more.

You Have Rights as a Student

Many students assume an unexpected pregnancy means putting college on hold, but that isn’t always the case.

If your college or university receives federal funding, Title IX protects pregnant and parenting students from discrimination. Depending on your circumstances, you may be eligible for reasonable accommodations, medically necessary excused absences, and opportunities to make up missed coursework.

If you live in a residence hall or other campus housing, you may also have questions about your living situation. Every school has its own housing policies, so it’s worth speaking with your housing office or student services department to learn what accommodations or resources may be available.

Depending on availability in your area, you may also find alternatives to on-campus housing, such as maternity homes that provide a safe, structured environment. Gathering information early can help you better understand your options and reduce unnecessary stress.

Explore Your Options

Every woman’s situation is different, and your decision should reflect your unique circumstances, goals, and values.

If you’re considering parenting, know that many students continue their education while raising a child. Family support, campus resources, childcare programs, and community organizations may help make balancing school and parenting more manageable. Hope Women’s Center also offers free parenting education, where you can earn baby items and maternity essentials while preparing for pregnancy and parenthood.

If you’re interested in adoption, today’s adoption plans offer flexibility. You can choose an adoptive family and decide the level of communication you’d like after placement through an open, semi-open, or closed adoption. For some students, adoption provides an opportunity to continue pursuing their educational goals while creating a plan for their child’s future.

If you’re considering abortion, it’s crucial to learn about the risks and side effects, as well as review your health history with a provider to be sure you’re making an informed decision.

Build a Strong Support System

An unexpected pregnancy can feel isolating, especially if you’re away from home or navigating college on your own. Remember that you don’t have to carry this by yourself.

At Hope Women’s Center, we’re here to answer your questions and connect you with helpful resources. Schedule your free, confidential appointment with us today.

Hope Women’s Center does not provide or refer for abortions.
