How did you feel when you heard your partner say those three little words, “I am pregnant”? We imagine you felt a mix of complete disbelief and fear. It’s understandable, but don’t panic. Help is available.
What Should I Do?
Although it may be difficult, refrain from laying blame or passing judgment. It takes two to become pregnant. Here are some steps you may want to take:
Step One: Confirm Her Pregnancy
Although she may have a late period and a positive pregnancy test, you still need to get more information. We provide free pregnancy testing at Hope Women’s Center.
If her test is positive, we’ll provide a referral for a free ultrasound scan. An ultrasound is vital for protecting her health and getting more information about the pregnancy.
Step Two: Learn Your Options
Although she makes the final decision, both of you should learn what’s available. You have three choices: get an abortion, make an adoption plan, or choose to co-parent.
No one should have to make this decision alone. Talk with her and share your thoughts and fears.
By all means, don’t say, “I support whatever you decide.” She needs to know that you’re actively committed to being there for her during this time.
Step Three: Don’t Pressure Her
You may know what you want her to do, but pressuring her only adds to her fear and frustration. Discovering an unplanned pregnancy is a confusing and overwhelming time for both of you.
Be there for her. Whether you are still in a relationship or not, you owe it to her and yourself to be a part of this.
