Pregnancy tests are the first step to confirming whether or not you’re pregnant. We offer a free and confidential self-administered test.
We’ll walk you through the process and review the results with you afterward. You’re not alone.
How Do Pregnancy Tests Work?
When a woman becomes pregnant, her body begins producing a pregnancy hormone known as human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG). This hormone builds rapidly and eventually enters her urine and bloodstream.
Pregnancy tests use either a blood or urine sample to test for hCG. We offer a free urine pregnancy test that you can administer yourself.
When Should I Take a Pregnancy Test?
Generally, a missed period is one of the first signs of pregnancy. However, there are other symptoms to be aware of.
Experts suggest waiting one to two days after your missed period before taking a test. The hCG hormone needs time to build to a detectable level.
Are At-Home Tests Reliable?
Over-the-counter pregnancy tests are reliable, but it’s vital to take them correctly. Some tests are more sensitive than others. The longer you wait after your missed period, the more reliable the results will be.
Follow these steps if you choose to take a home pregnancy test:
- Check the expiration date.
- Read the instructions thoroughly before beginning the test.
- Wait until at least a day or two after your missed period.
- Take the test in the morning when your urine is most concentrated.
- Wait the recommended amount of time before checking the results.
- Retest again a few days later to confirm the results.
Although unusual, it is possible to get a false negative or false positive result with a pregnancy test. We recommend getting an ultrasound to confirm the accuracy of the test and ensure your health is protected.
