When Should You Get an Ultrasound During Pregnancy?

Finding out you’re pregnant can bring up a lot of questions, especially how far along you are and what types of options are available to you.

One of the most important early steps you can take to answer your most pressing questions is getting an ultrasound scan. This scan provides key information about your health and your pregnancy, helping you understand what’s happening and what steps to take next.

At Hope Women’s Center, we offer self-administered pregnancy tests, support, and ultrasound referrals to confirm your pregnancy and give you the accurate information you need in a supportive, confidential environment.

Why an Ultrasound Is Important Early in Pregnancy

An ultrasound uses sound waves to create an image of your pregnancy inside the uterus. It’s a safe and effective way to learn essential details, including:

  • How far along you are (gestational age), which helps estimate your due date and understand your options
  • Whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus, ruling out conditions like ectopic pregnancy.
  • If the pregnancy is progressing, including whether a heartbeat is present

This information is vital if you’re considering your pregnancy options, as certain medical decisions depend on how far along you are.

Ultrasound can also help identify early health concerns, such as miscarriage or ectopic pregnancy, that require specialized medical care.

When Should You Get an Ultrasound?

Many women have their first ultrasound between seven and eight weeks of pregnancy, but you can schedule an appointment as soon as you receive a positive pregnancy test.

Around six weeks is typically when a heartbeat can be detected, the pregnancy can be measured accurately, and its location can be confirmed. The sooner you have this information, the sooner you can receive appropriate care and support.

If your pregnancy is further along, additional ultrasounds may be recommended. Many women receive a detailed anatomy scan around 20 weeks to monitor growth and development.

While Hope Women’s Center does not offer ultrasounds at this time, we can provide referrals for a limited obstetric ultrasound during the first trimester to verify the gestational age, location, and viability (heartbeat).
