Balancing School and Pregnancy: Tips for High School Students

Finding out you’re pregnant in high school can feel scary and isolating, but you are not alone, and there is more support available than you may realize.

Hope Women’s Center offers free, confidential pregnancy tests, ultrasound referrals, counseling, and ongoing support to help you understand your situation and your options without judgment and help you every step of the way.

Start With a Pregnancy Test and Ultrasound

Before anything else, confirm your pregnancy. A home test is a great first step, but you should also get an ultrasound.

An ultrasound is essential to verify that the pregnancy is viable and located inside the uterus. A pregnancy outside the uterus is a medical emergency requiring immediate care. Hope Women’s Center provides free pregnancy tests and ultrasound referrals, so you have the accurate information you need before making any decisions.

Know Your Options

You have three main options, and each deserves careful consideration:

  • Parenting: Many young parents successfully raise children with the support of parents, family, friends, and community resources. Programs like WIC, SNAP, and Medicaid exist to help. You don’t have to do it alone, and support systems can make a real difference.
  • Adoption: Adoption agencies can help connect you with adoptive families and guide you through the process. Adoption can be open, semi-open, or closed, depending on what feels right for you, and many agencies provide support throughout the process.
  • Abortion: Abortion is an option, but it comes with risks that deserve consideration. Physical risks include incomplete abortion, heavy bleeding, infection, and potential impacts on future fertility. Some women also experience significant emotional effects, including depression, anxiety, and grief, sometimes months or years later.

Staying on Track With School

A pregnancy changes your schedule, but it doesn’t have to derail your plans. A little planning early on goes a long way.

Talk to your counselor about your classes and any upcoming appointments. Many schools can shift deadlines, send work home during recovery, or build a schedule that fits around your needs.

If you start to fall behind, speak up sooner rather than later. Teachers can work with you much more easily when they know what’s going on.

Telling Someone You Trust

Carrying this alone is one of the hardest parts, and you don’t have to. Telling one person you trust can often make the next steps feel possible.

You can keep it simple. Something like “I found out I’m pregnant and I need help figuring out what to do” is enough to start the conversation.

If telling a parent feels impossible right now, a school counselor or a trusted teacher can be a good first step. Or you can contact us today for free pregnancy testing, ultrasound referrals, counseling, and compassionate support.

Help is Available

Many schools have programs specifically designed to support pregnant students. You have legal protections against discrimination and bullying, and support is available if you experience either. Reach out to a trusted adult, such as a counselor, teacher, or parent, and don’t be afraid to ask for what you need.

Hope Women’s Center is here for you every step of the way. Contact us today for free pregnancy testing, ultrasound referrals, counseling, and compassionate support. You deserve to feel informed, supported, and empowered to make the best decision for your future.
