Understanding How Abortion Ends a Pregnancy
There are two primary methods used to end a pregnancy: the abortion pill (also known as a medication abortion) and surgical abortion. The available options depend on how far along you are in your pregnancy and your personal health circumstances.
What Is the Abortion Pill?
The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, is approved for use up to 10 weeks of pregnancy. It involves taking two drugs: one that stops the pregnancy from growing and another that causes the uterus to contract and empty.
This process is similar to an early miscarriage and usually takes place at home over the course of several hours or days. Follow-up care is important to ensure the abortion is complete and there are no complications. Due to the risks involved, access to emergency or follow-up care is crucial.
What Is a Surgical Abortion?
Surgical abortion, also known as a procedural abortion, is a clinical procedure typically performed after 10 weeks of pregnancy.
There are two types of surgical abortions; both procedures are done in a medical facility, usually under anesthesia or sedation.
- Vacuum aspiration is used in the first trimester and involves removing the pregnancy tissue from the uterus using suction.
- Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) is used later in pregnancy and involves removing the pregnancy tissue from the uterus with surgical instruments.
Recovery time is generally short, and most people can resume normal activities within a day or two. However, there could be light spotting or mild cramping afterward.
What Should I Do Before an Abortion?
Before you move forward with any abortion procedure, it’s important to get an ultrasound.
This helps determine how far along you are in your pregnancy and whether it is developing inside or outside the uterus, both key pieces of information that affect which abortion methods are available due to safety reasons. An ultrasound can also confirm whether your body might naturally miscarry or if you have miscarried already.
